Onverwagt Prawns Project Set to Yield an Estimated $48M Per Crop

The prawns farming initiative in Onverwagt, Region Five, promises substantial economic benefits, with an estimated production of 12 tonnes of Vannamei prawns per crop, each valued at around $4 million, totaling approximately $48 million per season. Supported by a $100 million government investment, this project aligns with Guyana's goal to become a significant player in the global $4 billion aquaculture market. The project also plans to foster public-private partnerships to further enhance its scope. With five out of ten ponds currently operational and more to be ready by the second quarter's end, the initiative also includes building a larvae facility and a feed mill to cut costs and boost viability.
