GPL to Roll Out Smart Grid System to Combat Electricity Theft, Reduce Overall Losses

Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) plans to implement a smart grid system to address electricity losses, which currently stand at about 25%. This system, part of the second phase of the Gas-to-Energy (GTE) project, will enable remote monitoring and management of electricity usage, helping to identify and reduce theft and technical losses. The smart grid is expected to be operational by 2026, with interim measures including meter replacements and the removal of illegal connections. By the end of 2024, GPL aims to increase its power generation capacity to 265 megawatts, supporting the country's growing energy needs .
