Amendments to Guyana’s Aviation Law Enhance National Security

Guyana's legislature has passed significant amendments to the country's aviation laws, primarily to enhance national security and public safety. The newly ratified Civil Aviation Amendment Bill 2024 introduces provisions for intercepting aircraft flying illegally over Guyanese territory and establishing no-fly zones to restrict foreign aircraft over sensitive areas. This legislative update comes as Guyana prepares for an upcoming audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and follows recent tensions over airspace violations. The amendments, which enjoyed bipartisan support, are seen as proactive steps to safeguard Guyana's sovereignty and ensure compliance with international aviation standards. The new laws are set to be detailed further by the relevant minister and are expected to have considerable implications for both domestic and international flights over Guyana.
